Utah Transit Authority Case Study

April 24, 2015Case Study

Steward Active Directory — S2 Integration

The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is a public organization with nearly 2,300 employees based in Salt Lake City that operates a fleet of more than 600 buses and paratransit vehicles, 400 vanpools, 146 light rail vehicles, 63 commuter rail cars and 18 locomotives in a 1,600 square mile service area that stretches over six counties from Payson to Brigham City. The UTA serves the largest segment of population in the State of Utah, approximately 1.8 million and operates in one of the largest geographical service areas of any transit agency in the U.S.

With a growing operation, UTA determined a need to migrate its security system to manage employees’ access. The company partnered with Stone Security and braXos Security Software to implement an innovative, efficient solution.

Challenge: To manage physical access of employees, visitors and vendors proactively, using accurate data, within minutes of an update occurring.

Solution: Using the Steward middleware software platform, braXos helped UTA establish a Microsoft Active Directory – S2 Security provisioning, automating its access control provisioning operation.

Value Added: With braXos’ Steward Active Directory integration, UTA is able to control the physical security database with precision, accuracy and speed. UTA’s Active Directory security system integration is configurable and flexible to accommodate all security provisioning requirements.

“The braXos integration significantly helped with our workflow and efficiency. It is important that we now don’t need to work in two databases to update employee badges,” said Stacey Rogers, HRIS administrator at UTA.

Stone Security, based also in Utah, specializes in modern security integration and was hired by UTA in 2013 to replace their legacy security system. This replacement project included updating UTA’s provisioning process which both Stone and UTA suspected to be somewhat challenging. Aaron Heiner, Stone Security’s co-owner, chose the S2 access control system and used braXos’ Steward platform for software integration for the project with UTA.

“As a system integrator, we select the products we believe to be industry leaders,” said Heiner of selecting braXos. “We pick the products that are the best and get to know them well. We offer our clients the highest-quality products for their security system  needs.”

One of UTA’s primary objectives was to improve the Physical Security Department’s processes with both On-Boarding new and Off-Boarding terminated employees. The Steward Active Directory – S2 integration successfully accomplishes this.

Legacy access control system migrations are notoriously challenging. With braXos’ expertise in both Active Directory and S2, collaborating with Stone Security and UTA minimized data challenges, ensuring a smooth database population in S2.

Further, the quality of the integration was so simple that start-up and time for training was significantly minimized.

“The AD-S2 implementation was very straight-forward,” said Stacey Rogers, HRIS administrator at UTA. “braXos made this complicated integration look easy throughout the full process.”

The result for UTA was an end-to-end operation that seamlessly provisioned credentials for employees. Meeting UTA’s organizational requirements, the system’s demand automating provisioning would allow immediate access to the control system updating in S2.

“The braXos integration significantly helped with our workflow and efficiency. It is important that we now don’t need to work in two databases to update employee badges,” said Rogers.

“Our collaboration with braXos opened up new opportunities and made us aware of the benefits of having a capable, trustworthy partner,” Heiner said. “With braXos, we have more options for solutions we will can offer our customers. braXos implemented a product that is low maintenance and does what it says it will do.”
